How Do I Obtain a Marriage License?
PLEASE NOTE: MARRIAGE LICENSES ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL QUALIFYING COUPLES OF ALL GENDER COMPOSITIONS.
Procedure for Obtaining a Marriage License
The application can be completed no more than six months before the ceremony and should not be completed less than 72 hours before the ceremony.

Where to apply:
By Appointment Only. Contact the Registrar at (732) 747-0241 ext. *219. No weekend appointments.
THREE SCENERIOS:
- If only one of the individuals of the couple lives in NJ, they will need to apply for the marriage license in that NJ Municipality
- If both individuals live in NJ, they may apply in either individuals NJ hometown
- If neither of the individuals live in NJ, but they are getting married in NJ, they will need to apply in the town where the marriage ceremony will take place
Required documents when applying for a marriage license:
- Proof of your identity. by presenting your driver’s license, passport or state/federal I.D.
- Proof of residency.
- Your social security card or social security number.*
Additional requirements
- You must bring with you one witness, 18 years of age or older.
- There is a $28.00 fee with the application that can be paid by cash or check. Please make the check out to the "Borough of Fair Haven".
After submitting the application:
- There is a 72-hour waiting period (3 days) to process the application.
- After the waiting period, you will be required to return to the Registrar and pickup the license during business hours.
After the ceremony:
- The signed Marriage License should be brought, within five days after the ceremony, to the Municipality where the ceremony took place :
- The signed Marriage Licenses will be filed with the State by the Registrar.
- If you wish to acquire a Certified copy (or copies) please contact the Registrar in the Municipality where the ceremony took place.
- To obtain a Certified copy you must fill out a form
- The cost for a Certified Copy is $15.00
