Overdose Awareness Day - August 31, 2020

Overdose Awareness Day - August 31, 2020

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day.  As of June 1, 2020,  Monmouth County has lost 85 persons due to overdose. On July 30th the Senate passed a bill sponsored by Senator Anthony M. Bucco to designate August 31 of each year as Overdose Awareness Day in New Jersey. Our elected officials are helping our community shed light on the opioid overdose epidemic. (Please see attached Proclamation read at the August 17th Council Meeting.)

The Prevention Coalition of Monmouth County (PCMC): Opioid Task Force and local community organizations have worked on creating a visually impactful display to raise awareness of this tragic reality. Specifically, a sea of purple flags have been placed for each life that has been lost this year due to overdose (in Monmouth County).

There is a webpage with more information on opioid overdose, addiction, recovery and training videos.  The goal is  to raise awareness, but to also end the stigma and most importantly honor those whose lives have been lost and celebrate those who are in recovery today.
