Scams and Motor Vehicle Thefts

Scams and Motor Vehicle Thefts

May 21, 2020

Dear Fair Haven Residents,

With the challenging times, we all know that there are predators out there trying to take advantage of the situation.  The Federal Communications Commission is an up to date resource on all the current scams operating across the county.  The most popular scams at the moment are Covid-19 related.

Health Department Scam

Callers are posing as the Health Department stating that they are a contact tracer.  The caller is attempting to gain personal information such as social security numbers.  The Health Department will not ask for your social security number if they are contacting you.  You can ask for a call back number and make sure the number is a correct number for the Health Department.

Test Kits/Cures/Vaccines

Ignore offers for vaccinations and home test kits. Scammers are selling products to treat or prevent COVID-19 without proof that they work.

Robo-calls

Hang up on robo-calls. Scammers use illegal sales call to get your money and your personal information.

Fake emails

Watch out for phishing emails and text messages. Don’t click on links in emails or texts you didn’t expect.

Research before you donate

Don’t let anyone rush you into making a donation. Get tips on donating wisely at ftc.gov/charity.

Motor vehicle thefts

Criminals are becoming more brazen. There have been day time car thefts while homeowners are home. Please report any suspicious activity. Most of the time the criminals are driving high-end stolen vehicles that blend in to the area.   Residents are reminded to lock their car doors at all times, do not leave the key fobs in the vehicle and to remove all valuables.

Please forward this message on to family members, especially your senior citizen relatives, as they are frequently targeted for these scams.  If you have any questions or want to report a scam you can contact the Fair Haven Police Department.
