Update from Chief McGovern

December 8, 2021

Dear Fair Haven Residents,

As we approach the end of 2021 it’s important to reflect on what the year has brought to our community.  This year we saw COVID-19 cases and guidelines evolve in a positive way with access to vaccines, improved understanding on best health and safety protocols, a return to in person classes for our students, the return of the fireman’s fair, the Halloween parade and the sense of a return to normalcy in a lot of ways.  With all of these positive aspects considered, we also continue to face challenges and obstacles.  Please be aware that COVID-19 is still ever present in our community and still poses a great deal of challenges to our residents of all ages.  Please be respectful of the concerns and precautions of our friends and neighbors who continue to deal with the virus on a daily basis.

We began the daunting task of replacing the water main on River Rd which has impacted traffic in both Rumson and Fair Haven.  This vital project will be wonderful for our towns once complete, however we are still in the midst of the project which has required us to close portions of River Rd during day and night time hours, depending on where the work is being performed.  We take this decision seriously as the closures directly impact our residents and business alike.  We are continuing to do our best to limit the inconveniences caused by this project while maintaining the highest level of safety and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we strive to make our infrastructure stronger and more efficient.

We have continued to experience a high volume of vehicle theft in our county and especially on the peninsula.  Please help us by locking your vehicles and taking the key fobs inside with you.  If we are able to cut off the supply of available vehicles, then the opportunistic thieves will go elsewhere.  The holiday’s come with the increased potential for scams online, over the phone, by mail and in person right at your door step.  Please be vigilant of your surroundings and of your neighbors as well.  Porch pirates are everywhere and can strike at any time.  If you see something out of the ordinary, please don’t hesitate to call the police to make a report.

Throughout the pandemic our volunteer fire department and first aid squad members never skipped a beat and continue to respond to every call for service and we could not be more grateful.  Thank you again for your continued support of our Office of Emergency Management, Police Department, First Aid and Fire Departments.

Fair Haven is so much more than just a zip code and a municipality.  It’s a tight knit community filled with pride, diversity, professionalism, respect and tradition.  We are proud to welcome our newest community members who have chosen to make our Fair Haven their forever home and we thank you for contributing to the vibrant fabric of our community.

We hope that you all have an amazingly happy, festive and healthy holiday season and a very happy new year.

Joseph P. McGovern, Chief of Police
